Do Meta ads made with AI get a label?
Sometimes. Images made or materially edited with certain Meta generative AI features may show AI info in the ad's About this ad screen or an AI info label beside the Ad label. For ads about social issues, elections or politics, you must disclose realistic AI-made people, events or audio, and Meta also detects third-party AI automatically.
There are two different situations, and they work differently. If you use Meta’s own generative AI tools to make or materially change an ad image, Meta may add AI information to the ad on its own. If you run ads about social issues, elections or politics, the duty is on you: certain realistic AI-made or AI-edited media must be disclosed when you build the ad, or the ad may be removed.
When does Meta add AI info to a regular ad?
Meta says ad images created or materially edited with certain Meta generative AI creative features in its marketing tools may include AI info. It can appear in one of two places:
- on the About this ad screen, opened from the ad’s three-dot menu, or
- as an AI info label next to the Ad label on the ad itself.
Meta’s pages use “may”, and they do not list which features trigger which placement of the label. Meta has also changed its ad label: ads that used to say “Sponsored” now display “Ad”.
What must political and social issue ads disclose?
Advertisers must disclose when such an ad contains a photorealistic image or video, or realistic-sounding audio, that was created or edited with AI to:
- Show a real person saying or doing something they did not say or do.
- Show a realistic-looking person who does not exist, or a realistic-looking event that did not happen, or alter footage of a real event.
- Show a realistic event that allegedly happened but is not a true image, video or audio recording of it.
If you fail to disclose these cases, Meta says your ad may be removed, and repeated failure may bring penalties on the account.
What edits do not need disclosing?
Meta says you do not need to disclose AI use that is inconsequential or immaterial to the claim, assertion or issue in the ad, such as:
| Edit | Disclosure needed? |
|---|---|
| Adjusting image size | No |
| Cropping | No |
| Colour correction | No |
| Sharpening | No |
| A realistic AI person who does not exist | Yes |
How do you disclose AI media in Ads Manager?
- In the Special ad category section, select Social issues, elections or politics.
- In the ad creative section, select Includes media created or edited with AI.
Meta then shows an AI info label near the “Paid for by” disclaimer, and the ad’s details in the Ad Library state “Media in this ad created or edited with AI”.
What is automated detection?
For social issue, election and political ads, Meta uses industry-standard technology to detect media created or edited with third-party AI tools, with no action from you. If it detects this, the information appears under About this ad in the three-dot menu. You cannot request removal of an automatically detected label, you should still self-disclose when required, and detection does not change whether the ad is eligible to run.
FAQ
Can I use Meta’s AI creative tools for political ads?
No. Meta says its first-party generative AI creative tools remain unavailable for ads about social issues, elections or politics. Meta’s generative AI pages also list these ads among the categories that may not have immediate access to its generative AI features.
Does the disclosure option appear in every country?
Not necessarily. Meta notes that the AI disclosure feature may not be available in your region. It also says ads about social issues, elections or politics are not allowed to run in the European Union at all, so the disclosure question does not arise there.
Will the AI info label hurt my ad’s delivery?
Meta’s pages do not say that an AI info label changes delivery. For political and social issue ads, Meta states that automated detection does not change ad eligibility, and that your ads must still comply with all applicable ad policies.
